A few quick notes
1. Brown the beef well
Start the ground beef with salt and pepper in the Dutch oven and let it brown well before removing it.
2. Give the cabbage some color
Cook the onion and cabbage in butter after the beef leaves the pot, until they begin to caramelize.
3. Rice goes in last
Simmer the beef, tomatoes and broth first, then stir in cooked rice and heat it through before serving.
Get to know the ingredients
Roughly chopped cabbage
Keep the cabbage roughly chopped as listed so it is ready to cook with the onion in butter.
Cooked rice
The rice should already be cooked before adding it to the finished soup base for its final warming stage.
Two tomato textures
Diced and crushed tomatoes both go into the pot with the broth and browned beef before the low simmer.
