A few quick notes
1. Cook vegetables tender before assembling
After browning beef and the first vegetables, simmer the chili covered until all the vegetables are tender.
2. Add biscuit milk gradually
Stir in just enough milk for the dough to come together before rolling and cutting it on a floured surface.
3. Add cheddar near the finish
Bake biscuits until light golden first, then sprinkle with cheese for the short final melting stage.

A little more help as you go
Biscuit shapes can vary
Cut biscuit rounds if you like, or simply cut the rolled dough into squares before placing over chili.
A biscuit shortcut is allowed
You can use refrigerated store-bought biscuits if you'd prefer them to mixing and cutting the dough.
A few questions you might have
Does the melted butter go into the dough?
Cold butter is cut into the dough; the separate melted butter is brushed over biscuits after arranging them over chili.
Can I use whole-wheat flour?
All-purpose or whole-wheat flour are both listed for combining with baking powder, salt and optional garlic powder.
Can I prepare parts in advance?
Prepare the chili and biscuit dough separately, then cool and refrigerate them before assembling for baking.
Is garlic powder required in the biscuits?
It's optional in the biscuit ingredients; if using it, stir it through the flour mixture before adding cold butter.
Does the chili go into an ungreased dish?
Lightly grease the baking dish before spreading in the tasted, seasoned chili and topping it with biscuits.
