Additional recipe notes

Double: If you’d like to double the recipe, place in a 9×13″ baking dish. Green beans: For a shortcut you can skip simmering the green beans in stock and just use 2 cans of green beans. Mushrooms: You can add 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms (while cooking the onions), if desired. Make ahead : If you want to prepare this dish the night before, simply pour the prepared mixture into the casserole dish (leave out the fried onions and cheese and add just before baking) and cover with foil. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven for 15–20 minutes or until heated through. Add fresh French fried onions on top to bring back the crunch.

Storage & reheating safety

For cooked, perishable leftovers, refrigerate within 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F), using shallow containers for prompt cooling. Keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below, use refrigerated leftovers within 3–4 days, and reheat hot leftovers to 165°F, checked with a food thermometer. Follow any shorter package limit.
