A few quick notes

1. Brown ham after the onion

Soften the diced onion in butter first, then add ham and thyme until the ham's edges begin to brown.

2. Cover the gnocchi simmer

Bring broth and water to a simmer, gently stir in gnocchi and cover until the dumplings are tender.

3. Add peas off the heat

Remove the skillet from heat before stirring in thawed peas, lemon zest and cream, then adjust seasoning for the topping stage.

How to make it

0 of 10 steps complete

Make room for Gnocchi with Ham & Peas

Review ingredients in your pantry before anything is added. Meal plans use your household size; grocery-only additions use the servings selected above.

The last little job

Broil the cheese top

Add the chosen cheese and broil until golden and bubbly, then serve with optional extra cheese and chopped chives.

A little more help as you go

Use an ovenproof skillet

The same skillet holds the stovetop gnocchi and the final cheese-browning stage under the preheated broiler.

Cream alternatives are included

Heavy cream or half-and-half can be stirred in off the heat with peas and lemon zest before the cheese topping.

A few questions you might have

Do I boil the gnocchi in a separate pot?

They simmer directly in the skillet's broth and water, covered until tender, before the creamy additions go in.

Does the lemon zest cook with the onion?

It waits until the cooked gnocchi come off the heat, then joins peas and cream before seasoning and cheese.

Can I use leftover ham?

Yes. You can use leftover ham as well as the diced deli ham for this skillet.

Must the topping have two cheeses?

No. Use a single cheese or a combination; Parmesan and cheddar are two options.

When do I preheat the broiler?

Start with the broiler preheating so it is ready after the gnocchi simmer and the cheese topping is added.

Any more cooking tips?

Gnocchi is a potato dumpling and can be found in the dried pasta or frozen section in most grocery stores. I used deli sandwich ham, which I diced. Using leftover ham would work wonderfully in this dish. Any cheese can be used in the dish. I had Parmesan and Cheddar on hand so that is what I used. A single cheese or combination of 2 is fine to use.

Storage & reheating safety

For cooked, perishable leftovers, refrigerate within 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F), using shallow containers for prompt cooling. Keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below, use refrigerated leftovers within 3–4 days, and reheat hot leftovers to 165°F, checked with a food thermometer. Follow any shorter package limit.
